TALLAHASSEE – Gov. Rick Scott has signed a proclamation honoring the Montford Point Marines of World War II fame on the 72nd anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

More than 13,000 Montford Point Marines, including many Floridians, served with honor and distinction in combat overseas following segregated U.S. Marine Corps training for African Americans at Montford Point, North Carolina.  Members of the Montford Point Marines later were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for their distinguished contributions.
